I saw a couple of people say the same thing, and at the time I thought it strange since BMW is not in the habit of offering ex-factory deletions as retrofits...ever.

I believe I remember seeing several posts on here about people getting letters saying it would be retrofitted later. That’s a pretty big option to remove from the vehicle.

Usually retrofits gets tagged when something is not a factory option. Some dealerships are more critical than others, but I think they would still have to prove "retrofit" caused issues.

Hi folks. See my first post on this tread for an update. IX coding is dead in the water. As of the latest ISTA update the CAFD files for MGU are no longer present as it too has moved to Coding 2.0/Secure Coding.

Can it change? Well, sure, if governments force BMW to open up the info (think right to repair etc). But then that is already covered by BMW NA offering access to all their tools through TISUI (including coding) but that still entirely excludes *custom* coding, since you will only be able to code what ISTA allows, which is essentially nothing. Tokenmaster's LauncherPro 5 makes mention of Coding 2.0 support and limited online signing. Not sure how that would work without the actual CAFD files being available.

Problem is finding coding files to be able to code. There are programs possible if coding and bypassing need to be online, but you need the files to be able to read car. Only time will tell if they get leaked.

The always on, cloud connected nature of new BMW models also means that coding could be undone OTA. As for leaking…I don’t expect that to ever happen since not even dealerships have access to the files.

I've seen coding remotely undone on cars as early as IDrive 5. Nor do I anytime soon.

Cannot be done since no coding is possible on any of the required modules

i4 is built on the current 4-series stack and is considered a SP18 car, so nope, I do not think secure coding applies yet.

From BMW's perspective, I feel that the more Autonomous and interlinked the modules within the vehicle are, they're probably no longer wanting to allow risks for lawsuits. I could just see someone trying to code full hands off steering wheel, or other things that may interfere with the 'autonomous' bits. Even something as simple as coding additional 'blinks' could possibly have an effect on the hands free lane change possibly. Just my thoughts...lets just think about the interesting Tesla videos with folks playing cards instead of driving
