I'm actually amazed at the poor quality of the reviewers apart from autogefuhl..never seen those kids before.
Anyway, if the last generation was so bad (for most here it seems), why keep the same formula? They brag about the 8er being a race car to the road, as they developed it around thatGT4 car or whatever it is, but it's clearly not. Then they say they were going after the boxster with this car, while they clearly aren't. So what's left? Either they are not able to reach those levels of performance they intended to, or they are pretty lost within. And £75k? Is this correct? I mean.. |

why does it remind me so much of SL Mercedes of some years ago and FIAT Miata version they built recently... I think interior is great. I still think the first Z4 was the beesknees but thats because im biased due to my Coupe ownership for 4 years, all of which were fun!

It looks pretty good. At this point, that's all I think customers expect it to be. That and to be pretty decent at 7/10ths as one of the reviewers said.
Btw, this is the first "girl on Swiss roads" video I've ever seen and Jesus, she is incredibly vapid. She literally talked for four minutes and said absolutely nothing, other than a few facts that were on the top half of the first page of the press book. I'm sorry to be so harsh, but I'm kind of fed up with asinine YouTube "journalism" and she's a particularly easy target right now |

I think we just need to accept that bmw isn't producing sports cars, or particularly engaging cars anymore. The brand is building luxury GT type cars for those who want a soft, stylish ride. They're catering to an older demographic, vs in decades past, when their target market was younger professionals who appreciated an engaging, athletic, stiff ride (at the time anyway).
It's not just bmw, most manufacturers are going in this direction. Technology and comfort rule the day. Most motorists these days wouldn't know good steering feel if it bit them in the ass. They care about the stereo, apple car play, and all of the various toys and creature comforts. The driving enthusiasts who are willing to sacrifice some comfort to have a truly engaging car, make up an ever shrinking market. If bmw released the cars from the E* generations in the current market, they'd be lambasted and ridiculed for making unrefined cars. True driving focused cars will occupy ever shrinking niche segments. Unfortunately, the days of main stream models having those characteristics is ending. |

Disappointing reviews, had thought they'd be more +ve.
Common theme: it's not a sports car, much more of a roadster. Pity. With the exception of the true M fleet, i fear that BMW is losing its mojo

Not capable of making a serious sports car??? Have you been sleeping the past 3 decades?

We all kind of new the M40i's across the line were 'sporty' cars but too soft to be track cars.
The M badge on there is just a BMW trying to do the whole 'S' line that Audi does to make people spend more. This is just a 35i like last gen, there was no reason to expect it to be an M car. This is also not going to compete with a Boxster S. BMW sports line up doesn't quite match Porsche. Carrera ( base ) / M40i S / M GTS / M comp BMW has 5 tiers of M cars because Audi's success with A/S/RS and Porsche's base/S/GTS/RS Somehow though BMW being one brand now has 30i/M40i/M/Mcompetiton/M Cs/ M CSL No wonder BMW is annoying people. The M40i should have just been 40i like the e89 and prior. A lot of us had hoped BMW would defy the meaning of the nomenclature and sneak a proper M car into the M40i, but it is just a 40i like you'd find in a 3 series of yesterday. An M car is supposed to have a Motorsport connection and the current 40i doesn't really have one until the M240i race is used in May and the Nring 24h. But really the Z cars need waivers to get In to WEC and IMSA because it would need mods to make it a coupe instead of roadster and reportedly Ford and Porsche blocked it this time forcing BMW to use the M8. If history tells us anything BMW wanted to put the V8 in the e89 Z4 M but suddenly the car costs way more to make and thus costs $100k and now it's competing with 911s and Z06 and it doesn't quite make sense. Who's going to buy a $90-100k Z4? What engine would they put in it? |

No non-M car will approach Porsche or M CS levels of performance and response. GT-like performance is the explicit target. If it was intended to be a Porsche fighter, it would be an M car.
Someone else mentioned going after the Boxter . . . They may envision this to be like the non-S Boxter, and the chassis architecture might technically be capable of it, but from the cars I've driven recently, BMW's mainstream development group doesn't have the tuning capability and focus that Porsche clearly does (or even Audi for that matter). If BMW miraculously decides to make an M version of this car (unlikely IMO), I could see potential for it to come close to Boxter S level performance.

I don't know why everyone is upset that the Z is not a proper sports car? It probably would have been if that's what BMW wanted to be...
The Z3 started as a roadster and never changed even if there were ///M which to me were more of a mental masturbation equivalent of a sports car. This should not compete with Porsche on the track but for most people who don't track their car this could be a cheaper alternative to a posh roadster. There is something for everyone with every budget after all: Miata, Audi TT, Z4, Boxter, Audi R8, Lambos and Ferraris etc, etc...never been better to be a car guy. |

And that $445 included burying $2500 in negative equity from the previous E89...
But my best lease ever, when considering msrp and all costs was my last Jag F-Type R: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1410037

Yep. Nothing from BMW has come close to a serious sports cars from Porsche. Indeed GT3 and 4 just blow BMW away. GT4 one of best value for money sports cars I have owned. I8 not in same league as McLaren, Ferrari etc.

It goes to show the POV of the reviewer matters more than the reality of the situation. If you are looking for a BMW boxter S its never going to be that... case in point the C+D review
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...ar-performance "steering worthy of praise" "true sports car" Also looks like they all drove the weak engine euro version |
